Introduction: Eyelid disorders are commonly encountered during clinical practice but may vary greatly in clinical presentation and prognosis. The prevalence of eyelid disorders varies worldwide but there is limited literature regarding this context in Nepal. So, the aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of eyelid disorders among the patients attending Ophthalmology department of a
tertiary hospital in Nepal.
Methods: A total of 482 patients were enrolled in this descriptive, hospital based study. Eyelid examination was performed in details
to identify any eyelid disorder. Prevalence of eyelid disorder was calculated and their association with age and gender was also determined.
Results: The total 482 patients consisted of 301 (62.45%) females and 181 (37.55%) males. Prevalence of eyelid disorder was 2.26% among which majority of the eyelid disorders observed were eyelid mass 116(24.07%), blepharitis 100 (20.75%) followed by dermatochalasis 82 (17.01%). Eyelid disorders were commonly observed in 18-60 years of age group and among females.
Conclusions: Eyelid disorders are common among the patients seeking Ophthalmology care but the prevalence of eyelid disorder in this study is found to be lower than other studies conducted worldwide. Early histopathological diagnosis is suggested for timely management and favorable prognosis.
